Adult Leader Training Requirements
Dear Adult Leaders of Troop 197:
This memo summarizes the adult leadership training required by the Boy Scouts of America.
TRAINING REQUIREMENTS:
All of the training courses mentioned herein may be taken online, except Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (ITOLS, course code S11). The course catalog may be accessed at [1]. There you may choose a course to take, and you will be directed to MyScouting. Sign into MyScouting or create an account. Go to E-Learning to take the desired course. Be sure to link your BSA member ID with your MyScouting account. The number may be found on your BSA membership card. If you can't find your ID number please see the attached reports or contact me.
Youth Protection Training (Y01) must be taken before any adult may submit an application for registration. The certificate of completion for this training must be submitted at the time application is made and before volunteer service with youth begins. Youth Protection Training must be taken every two years. If a volunteer's Youth Protection Training record is not current at the time of recharter, the volunteer will not be re-registered. The Youth Protection Training online course takes about 30 minutes to complete.
A person does not have to be a registered volunteer or have an ID number to take Youth Protection Training. To take the training, log in to MyScouting or create an account. From the MyScouting portal, click on E-Learning and take the Youth Protection Training. Upon completion, print a certificate and submit it with an application. Keep a provided wallet card certification in your wallet. If you have taken Youth Protection Training online but did not input your member ID number, please log on to MyScouting and input your member ID in the My Profile section so the training will be linked to your records. If you have taken Youth Protection Training within the past two years but did not take the course online, log on to MyScouting to ensure your records are up-to-date, or contact the Atlanta Area Council for verification that your Youth Protection Training records are accurate.
After completing Youth Protection Training, adult leaders are considered trained and eligible to wear the official Trained emblem once they have competed the following training courses, according to their position in the Troop (position codes and course codes, if known, are shown in parenthesis):
Scoutmasters (SM and SA)
- Fast Start: Boy Scouting (SFS)
- Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (ITOLS, S11)
- Scoutmaster Specific Training (S24)
- Please Note: The instructor-led version of Scoutmaster Specific is the preferred method of training in the BSA. Self-Study such as these e-learning courses are only for those who cannot otherwise attend a training course.
Troop Committee (MC) and Troop Chairman (CC)
- Fast Start: Boy Scouting (SFS)
- Troop Committee Challenge (WS10)
ScoutParents Unit Coordinator (PC)
- ScoutParents Unit Coordinator Fast Start (WCF7)
- Troop Committee Challenge (WS10)
Chartered Organization Representative
- Chartered Organization Representative Fast Start (D62)
- This is Scouting (WA01)
- Training the Chartered Organization Representative (D72)
Tour Permits
In order to obtain a tour permit for a Troop outing, at least one registered adult leader on the trip must have completed the following courses, each of which must be retaken every two years:
- Weather Hazards (WS81)
- Safe Swim Defense (SSD)
- Safety Afloat (SA) (for any trip afloat)
- Climb On Safely (S74) (for any trip involving climbing or rappelling)
In addition to the courses listed above, there are many other worthwhile courses available online. Several of these specifically related to high adventure programming like Philmont, Sea Base and Northern Tier.
TRAINING STATUS OF TROOP 197 ADULT LEADERS
If you wish to check your training history online, or that of another adult volunteer, sign on to MyScouting, and click on Training Validation. You may may search by several parameters, including user name, member ID, email, and first/last names. Thank you for your attention to this memo and mainly for your dedication to Troop 197.
